Mitsubishi . How to Adjust a Carburetor Idle MixtureAdjusting your motorcycle's engine idle speed requires adjustment of the carburetor's idle mixture screw. This screw allows air into the carb's pilot system where it mixes with fuel. The position of the screw alters the amount of air allowed into the system, changing the amount of fuel that is added to the mixture. Closing, or tightening, the screw restricts the mixture and creates a leaner condition and lowers the engine's idle RPM. Opening, or loosening, the screw creates a richer mixture to increase the idle speed. Adjusting the screw is a fairly simple process, but takes a little patience. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Small screwdriver, flat-headSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Locate the idle mixture screw on the carburetor body and check the screw position. Using a small flat-head screwdriver, slowly turn the mixture screw clockwise until it is fully seated against the carburetor housing. Take note of the number of turns it took to seat the screw. Using the exact amount of turns, reset the idle screw by turning the screw counter-clockwise. 2 Start the motor and allow it to warm up for five to 10 minutes. This will bring your motorcycle to its operating temperature, providing an accurate baseline to set the idle mixture. 3 Adjust the idle mixture screw with a small flat-head screwdriver, turning the screw a quarter of a turn at a time until the motor is idling at your desired RPM range. To raise the RPM and enrich the mixture, turn the screw out by twisting it counter-clockwise. Lowering the RPM and leaning the mixture is done by turning the screw in, twisting the screw clockwise. Tips & Warnings Obtain a service manual for your motorcycle for in-depth carburetor settings and adjustment techniques. If you do not feel comfortable performing this task, seek the help of a qualified technician. Do not adjust the idle mixture before warming the motorcycle to its operating temperature to prevent an improper engine idle speed and loss of performance. Do not loosen the idle mixture screw beyond three full turns to prevent the screw from falling out of the carburetor. Suggest item Thanks for suggesting an item. Mitsubishi . How to Adjust an Idle Screw on a CarburetorThe idle adjustment screw on your carburetor-equipped car or motorcycle controls the amount of air that is allowed into the carburetor continuously, keeping the engine alive when the vehicle is in neutral. Incorrect idle screw adjustments may lead to the vehicle dying at stop signs and lights, or the engine wearing itself by out running too high all the time. Keep your car or motorcycle in great running condition by fine-tuning the carburetor idle screw. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Owner's manual Philips screwdriver Flathead screwdriver Tachometer Basic wrench set Step by Step : 1 Use your owner's manual to locate the carburetor and the carburetor idle screw. Pop the hood of the vehicle and determine if a screwdriver or wrench will be needed to turn the idle screw. 2 Install a tachometer if the vehicle does not already have one. A Tiny Tach is an inexpensive and easy option. Simply wrap the receiver wire of the Tiny Tach around one of the spark plug wires of the vehicle. 3 Using the owner's manual that came with your vehicle, determine the correct idle speed for your engine. Some vehicles have a strict idle RPM (revoutions per minute) range, while others may have a wide range depending on altitude and average weather conditions. 4 Turn on the vehicle and let it warm to running temperature. An engine runs differently when cold and therefore should be allowed to sit at least 10 minutes before any adjustments are made. 5 Watch the tachometer while the engine runs. If the engine is running at too high an RPM measurement, loosen the idle adjustment screw until it falls to the correct speed. 6 Tighten the idle screw if the engine runs at too low an RPM measurement. Continue tightening until the engine idles correctly. 7 Take the vehicle for a test drive. Watch and feel for stuttering when starting from stops. When you return, you may fine-tune the carburetor idle screw depending on your driving style and road conditions. Tips & Warnings If turning the idle screw does not allow for enough adjustment to the idle speed of the engine, there may be bigger problems with the vehicle. Have the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic before driving any significant distance. There's no way that they can keep a copy of every service manual, and access to specific instructions for servicing and repairing your particular vehicle can significantly cut the time — and therefore the cost — involved in doing a job. <«" Look in the lubrication manual. Every service station has a lubrication manual that's published by one of the major oil companies each year. These manuals show every lube point and grease fitting for every vehicle manufactured during the year of publication. Your service station probably has the last couple of years' manuals on hand. If you don't have a service manual, ask to see the lube manual if you're having trouble locating the lube points on your vehicle. e* Ask a professional. If you really have trouble finding your ball joints and you're unwilling to throw yourself at the mercy of a service station just for a look at the lube manual, give in and take the car in for a lube job someplace where they'll let you hang around and ask questions. Casually ask for a look at the lube manual or ask them to point out the lube points that they're going to work on. Say, "How many lube points does this model have?" They're usually happy to show you and answer your questions. People who work on cars love to talk shop (and most of them never suspect that "civilians" are secretly planning to do the work themselves next time). If you get a real talkative technician, you've found a gold mine; be sure to ask about the rest of the job, too. Lubricating the butt joints Lubing ball joints is really as simple as wiping the zerk fitting, fitting the grease gun onto it (use an adapter if you need one), and gently squeezing a little grease into the joint. The following takes you step-by-step through the procedure: 1. Find out how many lube points your car has and where they are. See the preceding section, "Finding the lube points," for help. 2. Wipe off the first zerk fitting and try to fit your gun to it. Does it fit? If not, you may need an adapter. Can you reach it? If not, you may need an extender. Mitsubishi . Place the grease gun to the fitting and gently squeeze a little bit of grease into it (see Figure 16-5). Never add so much grease that the ball is tightly packed. There should be plenty of give when you squeeze the sides of the ball. If the joint looks too hard and full, squeeze some grease out if you have the kind of fitting that has a back door. If you have a sealed joint, just add enough grease to fill it out a little. If the joint looks full before you start, don't Mitsubishi . Who invented to first car and when?
